Basic TCM Journal#1 1.23.25
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) seems to carry a lot of mystique for many people, whether they are Chinese or international friends.
The reason is that TCM and Western medicine indeed have significant differences in logical concepts. Western medicine follows the logical thinking that modern people use when studying any subject—logical reasoning. TCM, on the other hand, uses a completely different approach, focusing on divergent thinking and drawing analogies. The philosophy of TCM is advanced and effective, excelling at changing the body's environment to allow diseases to heal themselves. This is one of the reasons why Chinese medicine was once ahead of the world for over two thousand years. Nowadays, with environmental destruction and increasing mental stress, TCM, which seems mysterious but leads to philosophy and offers a path to health through the mind-body connection, is once again receiving global attention.
The similarities and differences between TCM and Western medicine:
- TCM studies macro concepts, believing that all life follows the same principles. The holistic view of TCM extends from the entire universe down to philosophy. One must understand Yin and Yang, the Five Elements, and study the Huangdi Neijing (The Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon), but it does not subdivide into specialties. TCM considers each life to be a whole, and local symptoms cannot be separated from the overall condition, just as the whole cannot be separated from its environment. Any symptom reflects an issue in the overall functioning of the body. For example, acne is actually a stomach issue, not a skin problem. When the stomach is regulated, acne will naturally disappear, rather than simply treating the local area.
- Western medicine focuses on the microscopic, excelling at specialization. Western medicine studies molecular biology, anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry. From DNA to RNA to proteins, Western medicine follows the central dogma of molecular biology, following linear logic.
- In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the five organ systems correspond to five functional systems, and their operation and regulation help the entire body complete metabolism.
- In Western medicine, functional systems are responsible for metabolism and the conversion of substances and energy, while regulatory systems such as the nervous system, endocrine system, and immune system help eliminate the effects of internal and external environmental disturbances on the body.
- You may see common parts from following chart, they started from different view but works toward to same goal - reduce suffering and pain! Hope new generations work and learn together for lives.
